Application Background

Heavy interrupted turning of hardened steel parts (e.g., shafts with keyways and oil holes after heat treatment, as well as gear tooth surface turning) subjects tools to extremely high cutting temperatures (typically exceeding 1000°C) and high-frequency mechanical shocks. Under these challenging conditions, a tool’s ability to handle extreme machining operations is fully tested. The following factors need to be considered when selecting tools:
●Hot hardness and wear resistance of the tool material, including CBN content and grain size;
●Toughness and impact resistance of the tool, including binder composition and insert structure;
●Tool performance improvement via edge design and advanced coating technology;
●Optimization of cutting parameters.


Solution Analysis
✨ In this case, turning the annular grooves in the middle of the gear shaft under heavy interrupted cut conditions generates severe high-frequency alternating mechanical stress as the tool enters and exits the workpiece. Worldia’s tooling solution uses the PNH3013 insert grade, which offers excellent toughness and impact resistance, increasing tool life by 13.3% compared to the original solution.
